Land on a glacier
Immediately after take-off the Knik Glacier appears straight ahead. Follow the braided glacial channels upstream and within a few minutes you are flying over this 6-mile wide and 28-mile long glacier. Zoom low over the surface and see turquoise melt pools, vertical walls of ice and immense crevasses. The helicopter lands in the middle of the glacier where the ice is up to 1000 feet thick. We outfit you with special overboots so you can explore safely with your pilot / guide. Take pictures to show your friend back home and after about 15 – 20 minutes reboard the helicopter for the next part of this amazing tour.
Inner Lake George
Lake George is one of the most beautiful lakes in Alaska. Surrounded by rugged mountains and glaciers this is the inner sanctum of the Chugach Range. To the east lies the enormous Colony Glacier. A little to the left is the hanging Cataract Glacier, with waterfalls cascading down its sides. To the west, Whiteout and Troublesome Glacier originate from a huge ice field high in the mountains. At the end of the valley Lake George Glacier leads south towards Portage. Eagles frequent this area and it is one of the premier habitats for mountain goats in Alaska. Bears and moose thrive in this sheltered valley and are seen on about 50% of our tours. Lake George is usually frozen until the first week of June and later in the summer icebergs calving off Colony glacier line the shore. After witnessing all this natural beauty it’s time to slowly meander back to our base, flying low trough the Great Gorge of the Knik to see the vertical wall of ice that makes this area a favorite with glaciologists around the world.
If the great outdoors made you hungry grab at bite in our restaurant before hitting the road again or, if you are like most people and don’t want to leave our little piece of paradise, reserve one of our 15 deluxe cabins and enjoy a quiet night in the wilderness.
