  • KRL_Heli_02

Immediately after take-off in your private helicopter the mighty Knik Glacier appears straight ahead. Follow the braided glacial channels upstream and within a few minutes you are flying over this 6-mile wide and 28-mile long glacier. Zoom low over the surface and see turquoise melt pools, vertical walls of ice and immense crevasses.

Lake George is one of the most beautiful lakes in Alaska, and it’s located just beyond the Knik glacier. Surrounded by rugged mountains and glaciers this is the inner sanctum of the Chugach Range. To the east lies the enormous Colony Glacier. A little to the left is the hanging Cataract Glacier, with waterfalls cascading down its sides. To the west, Whiteout and Troublesome Glacier originate from a huge ice field high in the mountains. Land at our base camp for a stroll along the shore and a warm beverage. Enjoy time on your own to explore, glass the hills for wildlife or see the icebergs roll over in the lake.

Eagles frequent this area and it is one of the premier habitats for mountain goats in Alaska. Bears and moose thrive in this sheltered valley and are often seen wondering on the hillside. Lake George is usually frozen until the first week of June and later in the summer icebergs calving off Colony glacier line the shore. After witnessing all this natural beauty the helicopter will come to pick you up and fly back to our base at Knik River Lodge.
